Week 3. Customizing your CollectionBuilder Project

In the final session of the workshop you will learn how to edit the theme.yml (found in your repository’s ‘_data/’ directory) to customize the visualizations and home page of your project. In the second half of the workshop, we will explore how to customize the content included on the browse, map, data, and item pages of your site.

1. 5 minutes Icebreaker 1. Possible icebreaker: ask participants to share their favorite music to work to.
2. 5 minutes Review of previous workshops 1. Review how metadata drives website content, website structure, Markdown content
4. 5 minutes Website Structure Introduce at a high level how the contents of the _data and _layouts folders control the website structure
5. 15 minutes Edit theme.yml Walk participants through editing theme.yml file in the _data folder. 1. Edit home page image to add an image from the new collection 2. Mention Item Page Browser Buttons 3. Add “unknown” as a Subject stop word and note its effect on the word cloud. 4. Make Japan the center of the Maps page
5. 15 minutes Edit configuration csvs Walk participants through editing config csvs. 1. —- 2. —–. 3. Remove Map and Location pages from the menu bar.
6. 10 minutes Edit Home Page Introduce participants to the _layouts folder. 1. Remove Time and Locations cards from home-infographic.html
7. 25 minutes Open work time Opportunity for participants to begin work on their own custom project, or to continue to customize their existing project.
8. 10 minutes Final wrap-up and questions 3-2-1 exercise
